ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, we saw that many of the views of the project management processes feature project start or project initiation in some way. The management process model PMI PMBOK (Project Management Institute, 2013), has initiating processes as the first set of project processes, and that is reflected in the new ISO standard for project management, ISO 21500, (International Standards Organization, 2012). The process model developed by Gareis (2005) and adapted by Gareis et al (2013), has initiation as the first step, but they suggest that is pre-project and not part of the project itself. That is similar to the approach taken by PRINCE2 (Office of Government Commerce, 2009), where Project Start is a pre-project phase when the project brief is written and Project Initiations is the first project phase, when the project imitation document is written. Thus project start-up is an essential feature of all projects. If you don’t start a project well it has a greatly reduced chance of finishing well. So starting a project properly is something you should put a substantial amount of effort into.
