ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how the reader can advance health promotion activities among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, what they know works and how they can build on positive improvements in health outcomes through the promotion of health and wellbeing. Aboriginal community-controlled health services are achieving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and they are essential for the provision of appropriate health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The chapter discusses the importance of social determinants, ensuring equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities working to develop and maintain wellbeing through their own self-determination and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander activity. It presents an overview of just a few of the numerous successful health promotion programs developed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and championed by community members.
