ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that individual and collective solutions can, and must, go hand in hand. As Old Testament theologian and author Walter Brueggemann explains, “The task of prophetic imagination is to cut through the numbness, to penetrate the self-deception”. One who speaks in the prophetic mode does not take for granted an already-scripted vision and ask how to implement it. Prophetic imagination is also “poetic imagination.” He continues: “It is the vocation of the prophet to keep alive the ministry of imagination, to keep on conjuring and proposing alternative futures to the single one the king wants to urge as the only thinkable one.” With regard to corporate mindfulness programs like Google's Search Inside Yourself, proponents like Tan often claim that therapeutic mindfulness programs can generate transformative change within dysfunctional systems. The chapter highlights a range of groups who have the potential to hold corporations and governments accountable.
