ABSTRACT
Sociologists, like Durkheim or Parsons, who had counted on ‘professionalization’ to ‘moralize’ industrial societies, should have taken into account these unexpected effects they neglected. Professionalization cannot be analysed merely as a tendency towards qualification. It also contributes to a move towards a tertiarization of the labour market, with low productivity, typically coupled with the defence of narrow corporate interests.
