ABSTRACT

The American Lutheran Church, and the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, are fairly equal in size and together account for eight million members. The Lutherans have councils of their own, the Lutheran World Federation and the Lutheran Council in the USA. The Lutheran World Federation convened a subsequent meeting on peace issues in Geneva, 6-8 November 1981. Bishop Crumley's observations provide an introduction to the position held by the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). The LCA Biennial Convention adopted a Social Statement in 1970 which Richard J. Niebanck describes as "the official statement" of the Church. The response of the Seventh-day Adventists and the Conservative Baptist Association of America graphically reflect the diversity of opinion among the free churches both write that their groups have taken "no position" on the subject of nuclear weapons. Southern Baptists support nuclear arms control and a strong national defense.
