ABSTRACT

The National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA (NCC) is a "cooperative federation" of 32 Protestant and Orthodox Churches. Perhaps in pursuit of the last injunction, representatives of the NCC met with officials from Orthodox and Protestant churches of the Soviet Union in a Consultation on Disarmament on 27-29 March 1979. The United Methodist Church is the second largest Protestant denomination in the United States, and the largest member of the NCC. The forty-nine executive officers who comprise the Council of Ministers of the Christian Church in the United States and Canada prepared a message to be read to all congregations on 20 December 1981. The United Church of Christ has been a leading advocate of nuclear disarmament among the National Council churches. The UCC is clearly one of the leading Protestant churches in the peace and disarmament movement.
