ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an overview of the assessment of family caregivers' needs and why this is important. It focuses on the strategies for intervention, including individually focused, community-based services and support networks. The role of nurses in this process such as signposting and referral to various services and support groups is discussed. The chapter explores the importance of fostering hope in supporting families and carers. It provides insights into a range of interventions that can be used in practice to support family caregivers. There are many valid reasons to consider ongoing reassessments of family caregivers. The use of valid and reliable assessment tools can assist nurses and other healthcare professionals in focusing interventions on the needs of family caregivers. Nurses need to communicate effectively with patients and caregivers to develop effective care planning and achieve positive outcomes. Emotional and instrumental support may be available from family and friends.
