This chapter discusses the increasing focus of the Indian government on improving its health care provision. The current system is deeply iniquitous, giving little security to much of the population, but government is working towards a system that would provide universal coverage and thereby a degree of security in health care provision for the people. As has been graphically illustrated by the huge earthquakes and tsunami witnessed in Japan and India, one emerging subject in public health is how to deal with an unanticipated disaster situation that requires large-scale intervention and lifeline infrastructure. New technology always becomes affordable eventually and the new goal is to find its cross-sectoral applications, such as a tool to make universal coverage possible in order to achieve human security and discipline to meet emerging health care needs. In India, attempts are being made to remedy years of neglect of the public health system through tremendous boosts in spending aimed at achieving universal health care coverage.
