ABSTRACT

This chapter balances the perspective of a senior researcher who has experience in evaluating, supervising and editing research with a reality check from a recent PhD graduate with experience in publishing translational research in applied psychology. We discuss the key issues involved in turning research results into peer-reviewed publications. We discuss conference (poster and paper) presentations, books and journal article publications for both novices and more experienced researchers. The chapter explains common academic citation-based measures and their relevance for early career researchers and offers tips for improving research outcomes and avoiding questionable research practices. Our key recommendation is that you should seek to follow the publication practices of the scholars you respect in the scientific community that you seek to contribute to.
