ABSTRACT

The first light airs of the land breeze were not felt until the Sun was above the horizon. With it we set out immediately to stand offshore under full sail. At times it fell very light and at others it was a little fresher, but under full sail it effectively gave us enough sea room before it dropped completely. Thus by eight o’clock we were a good three leagues offshore when the first light [sea] breeze got up from NE, and we had to haul the wind in the second quadrant. At noon our latitude was 44°33′ the low ridge on Cabo San José bore S65°W and Cabo Raso 1 N74°W by compass.
