ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the purpose of education and the need for the education for mankind. Education has a telos, a kind of necessary future directedness towards something out or in there. Kant wrote that man is the only creature in need of education. Philosophical anthropologists have claimed that humans need education because one cannot rely on the natural instincts and therefore one has to move from first to second nature. The profound question is whether the role of the teacher primarily is to invite people to enter an institution that possesses an a priori purpose. All of us are complex creatures of mixed nature–nurture patterns, and some people have a hard time wiring their ‘educational’ synapses and a harder time building up their ‘intellectual’ neuro-plasticity and hopefully their craftsmanship than other ones. But all this has also to do with the stimulation from the background.
