ABSTRACT

The authors' key priority is helping teachers learn so that they can more effectively teach their students. Unleashing great teaching through great professional learning not only helps improving outcomes for students, but it helps teachers thrive. School leaders find designing professional learning that is focused on the organisational edge is easier when thinking about a framework of outcomes. This framework helps identify the nature of the intended impact from professional learning and the depth of expertise that is needed. It can be helpful to draw a distinction between professional learning activities and programmes. For many professional learning activities and programmes, it is possible to trace the thread right through to the desired impact on students at the organisational edge. Teachers and schools are there for public service: to help students succeed in their learning and life. It is a good check to review how much time is being spent on indirect-impact professional learning, compared to direct-impact.
