ABSTRACT

With practice, you and your team will discover your own effective and efficient ways to conduct field studies. You may prefer working by yourself or with a team, with some of you working in parallel, meeting daily or twice or three times a week, to share observations, ideas, and preliminary insights, throughout the course of the study or just coming together to discuss the analysis. One of you may be responsible for recruiting participants, another for gathering data, yet another for the analysis of data, or you may decide that the team should do everything together. Either way, being part of the research process and sharing and discussing insights will influence each of you to return to the information design process with a more empathetic understanding of the needs of your intended audience, because you will be immersed more deeply in their context, rather than passively designing based on assumptions.
