ABSTRACT

This chapter tackles the issue of mediating between quantitative and qualitative data analysis based on the example of contemporary artists’ networks in Croatia. It describes attempts to achieve deep interdisciplinarity between art history and social network analysis. Network analysis is based on the assumption that certain social phenomena cannot be explained solely by the characteristics of an individual or of specific social groups but rather by their roles in structured social relations. The process of collecting and processing data for this particular period and place raised specific issues: in addition to the fact that there was still no systematic art-historical research of the period, the socio-political context of Croatia in the 1990s caused stagnation in artistic production in public cultural institutions.
