ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews vocabulary and choose words that grab attention, encourage engagement, influence behaviour and make an impact. Courageous conversations are required if we are to help stakeholders discover a new way of doing safety they can love, and that guarantees results. With 180,976 words in current circulation within the English language, we certainly have plenty to choose from when constructing communications. An interesting little project known as the One Word Interview works in a similar way to provoke thinking. In short, good communication is good business sense, and, arguably, critical to organizational success. Thought leaders, shapers and influencers from around the world are asked for their views on workplace safety and health for example, the value, challenges and big issues in the present and also in the future. The One Word Interview encourages us to distil our message and focus our attention on what matters most.
