ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a novel hybrid stateless Quality of Service (QoS) model for multimedia services in wireless Mobile Ad hoc Networks. It describes both stateful and stateless approaches, the advantages and disadvantages. The chapter argues that in a large network with the highest mobility scenarios, the approaches suffer from problems of scalability, false admission. The emergence of real-time applications, the widespread usage in communication have generated the need to provide QoS support in wireless and mobile networking environments. The support of multimedia services over ad hoc networks is one of the hottest challenges facing today’s industry, research community working on this area. The chapter considers stateful models and protocols that store information concerning the state of both nodes and traffic. A number of stateful QoS approaches have been discussed in the literature. A survey of the existing works reveals that the are many subproblems that are often brought up when attempting to provide QoS in a wireless ad hoc environment.
