Earlyquantificationisexploratory,illustrative,andoftendemonstratesonly theobvious.QuantificationinEnvironmentalDesignResearchhasproceeded throughdifferentstages,eventhoughtherehavebeenanumberofestablished fieldsdealingwithsimilarproblemsforsometime.EnvironmentalDesignResearch hasnowcaughtup,andalthoughitstillborrowsmethodsandtechniques,itis nolongertentativeandexploratory.Thefourpapersinthissectionare representativeofawiderangeofquantitativeresearchthatisonlymarginally self-conscious.Theyaremorethanmereapplicationsoftechniques;theyare morethanmerelyillustrative.
