ABSTRACT

Public opinion often proclaims that self-esteem confers many healthy benefits for people. However, an in-depth understanding of its influence on healthy functioning is still emerging. Most research on self-esteem phenomena has studied its level: the degree to which one’s feelings of self-worth or acceptance are generally positive or negative. These studies have found that high self-esteem is often linked with a myriad of positive outcomes including greater subjective wellbeing (Myers & Diener, 1995), and self-confidence (O’Brien & Epstein, 1988).
