ABSTRACT

None of the other Qumran wisdom texts is nearly so extensive as Sapiential Work A. Nevertheless, some are quite substantial and make important contributions to our picture of wisdom at Qumran. 4Q424 describes persons to be avoided (if you want something done) and persons to be cultivated as friends (for their intellectual and moral character). 4Q420-421 describes the characteristics of a wise and righteous person. 4Q413 begins or introduces a hymn about acquiring wisdom. Likewise, 4Q298 begins or introduces the speech of the máskil to the “sons of dawn.” All these works are fragments of wisdom instructions in which the speaker addresses an individual or a group and explains to them how to act wisely in human society or in an even more cosmic framework.
