ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses strategies for combating racism and other related, pernicious problems in the workplace, with the ultimate goal of making a diverse work environment more conducive to productive, fulfilled workers. The research shows that people of color continue to be concentrated in lower-level, lower-paying positions in government workforces. It also shows that occupational segregation continues to exist, whereby people of color are in departments or agencies that have traditionally employed them. Diversity programs certainly cannot ameliorate the pervasive plight of racism in our society, but they can help make the workplace a less hostile, more accommodating, and healthier setting for all its members. Employers will certainly need to tailor the programs so that they are appropriate and relevant to the different racial and ethnic groups composing their workforce.
