ABSTRACT

This is a momentous time for radio and digital audio. 2020 marked the 100th anniversary of commercial radio broadcasting that originally brought the world to the listener. Now listeners have the world in the palms of their hands with countless ways of listening to music, news, and other forms of audio entertainment. Now digital audio streaming services such as Spotify, Pandora, and YouTube are threatening the existence of traditional radio. For the first time in history, time spent listening to digital audio streaming has surpassed time spent listening to radio. Radio will have to reinvent itself at a time when artificial intelligence is making music selections for an eager audience, and new forms of audio hardware and software are pulling users away from the centenarian audio broadcast medium.
