ABSTRACT

This chapter features a wide variety of poetry writing workshops which can be adapted according to class ability levels, interests and needs. Music has been used as a stimulus for creative writing workshops for years. Children often need to hear a piece of music at least twice. Some children ask for the music to continue playing softly for the duration of the workshop. Clearly, as with all writing, full concentration is vital, and it may help if the class closes their eyes initially. Really, all creative writing activities in the primary classroom begin with talk in some way or other, but the following activities exploit talk and improvisation as a way of sourcing material for poetry.
