ABSTRACT

The content covers the full range of themes identified within the framework for education for citizenship in the National Curriculum for England including: • social and moral education • community involvement • political literacy

It includes sections on what many teachers would see as new dimensions of the curriculum, including: • conflict resolution and peer group mediation • involvement in the community • learning about the citizen and the law • understanding decision-making through democratic procedures • awareness of the global community

In each chapter there are outlines for lessons for students aged 7-14 (Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3). These support teachers who wish to teach citizenship as a discrete area of the curriculum, as well as those who are looking to incorporate it into subject areas. The activities are all based on a common framework which identifies: • Purpose: identifying learning outcomes related to education for citizenship

and other subject areas. • Preparation: providing information about resources needed. • Procedure: providing guidance on the content and sequence of the activities,

from whole class introductions to group work; providing examples of key questions to encourage discussion and involvement.
