ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a template for designing or redesigning a formal mentoring program. The template is presented in three steps: identify program goals and outcomes, model mentoring coordinators' theory of change, and discern resources. Mentoring programs are formal efforts to connect proteges with mentors to achieve a desired outcome. Thus, the first step to designing a program is to clearly define the expected goals and outcomes. In other words, resources are being allocated in expectation of some different outcome than normally might occur. Goal clarification is an important first step in designing a mentoring program. Second step helps mentoring coordinator outline the processes of mentoring. Mentoring programs are created in the hope that the participants will change in some way that also will benefit the organization. The final step in designing a mentoring program is to use mentoring coordinators' logic model to determine the necessary resources for their program.
