ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the acknowledgement of the traditional custodians of Australia, Aboriginal people. The chapter is written in a narrative style to reflect the author's cultural standpoint as an Aboriginal educator. In this chapter, the terms Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Indigenous are used inter-changeably. It defines flexi-schools in Australia and discusses the role they are playing in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to remain engaged in education. The remainder of this chapter that educators in any setting wish to consider when teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. It was alarmed by the lack of critical discussion throughout the coursework offered about understanding of self and how that affects the choices made as teachers. It was the first schooling context where witnessed and it has been a part of positive discussion with young people about their cultural identity.
