ABSTRACT

This chapter considers international collaborations from the perspective of research administration. It reviews the kinds of challenges that international teams of scientific collaborators face and the resulting complications that institutional administrators must manage. When scientists collaborate, especially cross-nationally, they require institutional and administrative support. It is often difficult, however, for research administrators to anticipate the full range of complications that can and do arise in cross-national research projects. The question is: What should institutions do to prepare for challenges that come up in a wide variety of situations? The following actual cases illustrate some of the administrative issues that arise in international research, as well as the kinds of adaptations needed to manage research that is carried out in cross-national settings.
