ABSTRACT

The currently operating LWRs, both BWRs and PWRs, can be classified into standard types based on their principal technical features. Although such an identification has not been made by each design firm for its reactors, we use the existing designations for reactor types that have been so identified; in the remaining cases, we have made new classifications according to predominant nuclear steam supply system (NSSS) characteristics with the assistance of the relevant' reactor vendors and safety authorities. This chapter presents the most important safety features for each of the defined standard types of BWRs and PWRs.
