ABSTRACT

Depth of field (DOF) is an effect, typical in photography, which results in regions of varying focus based on their distance from the camera. In computer-generated special effects, artists try to mimic the effects of DOF to produce more realistic images [Demers 04]. When integrating computer-generated effects, which are rendered in perfect focus, with real captured images, DOF must be applied during the compositing phase. Mixing real and synthetic images requires a realistic defocus effect that can mimic the behavior of the original camera.
