ABSTRACT

New media storytelling tools are altering, or will likely alter, the framing of news in the digital age. To help understand these changes this chapter examines a number of such tools, including hypermedia, omnidirectional imaging, and object-oriented multimedia. Hypermedia are the online tools that allow journalists and other storytellers to create electronic links between their stories and other online content. Omnidirectional imaging refers to 360-degree view imaging systems, including still or full-motion video, which permit viewers to pan, tilt, or zoom about a visual space not possible through conventional imaging technologies. Object-oriented multimedia refers to the creation of digital objects in full motion video and audio. Iyengar presents evidence that television news routinely report events in the context of specific events, or 'episodic' news framing. Episodic framing presents concrete events to illustrate broader issues, whereas thematic framing offers aggregate or general evidence.
