ABSTRACT

These basic principles of democracy can stand as information for the teacher or can be used with older students to demonstrate that democracy is a concept involving much more than majority rule. They could also be used as a diamond ranking exercise for older students or staff. Participants should be asked to rank the statements, putting the statement they think is most important at the top, and so on (see p. 55 in Chapter 4 for an example of how to carry out a diamond ranking exercise).
