ABSTRACT

In this book, we have presented eight instructional methods that have a solid research base to support their efficacy. From lecture to reflection, these methods have proven effective over time and across research studies. For example, active lectures can help students gain knowledge, while discussion can help students to learn to appreciate each other and deepen their learning. Peer teaching is an effective method for deepening learning of both the teacher and the learner. Games are great for review and to motivate students. Active reading helps students gain content from what they have read, and writing to learn helps them not only to process what they have learned but also to learn more. Graphic organizers are useful tools for summary as well, and they can help students retain and transfer knowledge. Finally, reflecting on what they have learned helps students transfer knowledge and skills gained in one course to others. In short, tried-and-true instructional methods tend to do what they have set out to do.
