ABSTRACT

Memory is a complex brain function made up of a number of different functions/processes, each controlled by different parts of the brain. Long-term memory is primarily a temporal lobe brain function. It is what most people think of as being memory. Short-term memory is considered to be a function of the brain's parietal lobes. Amnesia is the general term for loss of memory. Patients may have difficulty holding on to new memories from the time of their brain injury. This is known as hippocampal amnesia. Memory problems can occur due to damage to the frontal lobes. This impairment involves difficulty retrieving/accessing memories that have been encoded. Patients with diencephalic memory problems have disorganised memories and frequently misremember things. Short-term memory is not impaired, but both recent and remote memories are affected. Patients may have problems with their short-term memory or working memory.
