ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the main ways in which migrant women nurses are refigured in the diasporic conditions of Delhi. Malayali identity is fluid and changing despite the insistence on originality and authenticity. In recent times, many critiques busted the highly misguided notion of Kerala women’s high status in society, especially with reports on the abominable level of violence against women in domestic and public spaces. The gender insensitivity of the major political parties is demonstrable in the low number of women as peoples’ representatives in the state and central assemblies. Malayali identity also takes shape in its contrast with others; it is, therefore, others who help define Malayali identity in their diasporic setting. Identity politics within the migrant Malayali community is composed of various dimensions based on caste, class, gender, family status and place of origin back in Kerala.
