ABSTRACT
In Chapter 6,I outlined the process of the fieldwork for the study and described my attempts to adhere to feminist research practice in my use of a biographical method of research, as a way of both reaching and hearing the voices of older widows. The inclusion of such detailed information in the book is I argued fundamental to understanding the generation of such sensitive data, data that would not have been available had I not paid attention to the process of the research. The research literature, discussed in Chapter 5, stressed the interactive and collaborative nature of feminist biographical research practice and also acknowledged the importance of power issues affecting this collaboration (Bornat, 1993; Standing, 1998). In addition the lingering reflections for both the person telling the story and the person who is listening to that story were noted (Opie, 1992; Yow, 1994). Feminist research practice makes these reflections explicit and incorporates them in to the research process (Oakley, 1981). Indeed, the data and consequent knowledge emerging from feminist research is a product of this practice (Harding, 1987). Fundamental to feminist research practice therefore, both as a result of reflection and participation, as well as the generation of data, is the potential for change for all those involved in the process (Kelly, 1988; Kelly et al, 1994).
