ABSTRACT

Library research days started each unit as a means to foster a sense of inquiry in students. Many students who take Dance Appreciation are first-year undergraduate students and feel overwhelmed by library research. Even this generation of students who are adept at finding almost anything online are often overwhelmed by true research. The chapter provides a discussion on the following topics: religion; politics; race, ethnicity, and culture; gender, marital status, and sexual orientation; body type; and ability. By grouping religion, politics, race, ethnicity, and culture together one right after the other, students make connections among those topics more easily and are better able to see how they affect one another. Students are beginning to make connections between their experiences and their worldview. They tend to start the semester with preconceived notions of what dance is; what part they play in policies, politics, and decision making; and how they can affect change in the world.
