ABSTRACT

This chapter provides to reframe some of the key issues related to leaders, leading and leadership. Improved leadership is increasingly proposed as the answer to project delivery shortfalls. Having multiple frames or perspectives makes it possible to reframe problems and situations in order to gain additional clarity and insights, generate alternative options or uncover innovative strategies. L. G. Bolman and T. E. Deal propose a four-frame mapping that shows that each frame develops its own image of reality. Each frame utilises central concepts to develop an image consistent with its metaphor, and each is then concerned with a different set of key issues and identifies with a basic leadership challenge. Richard Bolden explores the paradoxes faced when researching leaders, leading and leadership. He draws on his experience of studying leadership in a range of different contexts to highlight the limitations of traditional perspectives on leadership and to offer alternative ways and approaches.
