ABSTRACT
American industry constantly encounters governmental regulations affecting the conduct of their operations. While the emphasis of many of these regulations is on employee health and safety, fire protection and prevention codes and laws are also involved. Federal agencies have been active in fire protection for many years, in both a regulatory and nonregulatory role, providing for protection of employees, the public, and federal property. In recent years, federal regulatory authority for safety has greatly increased. The Environmental Protection Agency has broad regulatory, enforcement, and research authority relative to reducing air and water pollution. The Community Right-To-Know regulations have an impact due to the physical fire hazards of chemicals being manufactured, used, or stored by industries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has broad regulatory authority over safety and health aspects of products sold to consumers. This agency is also involved with flammability standards for fabrics.
