ABSTRACT

There is no denying that many inside have engaged in violent and nefarious behaviors. However, once imprisoned, the chance to successfully lead a productive life is hindered by the labels given. By employing a Social Interaction perspective and labeling theory, this chapter focuses on how art and art therapy can help relabel the dehumanized and objectified inmates, affording them an opportunity to rise above the oppression that makes it difficult for them to adapt and succeed, either within the prison walls or upon release.
