ABSTRACT
Such factor of safety values can be compared with some target values proposed by Terzaghi and Peck (1967) and by Canadian Geotechnical Society (1992) that for earthworks vary between 1.3 and 1.5. The upper value applies to usual loads and service conditions while the lower value applies to maximum loads and the worst expected geological conditions.
