ABSTRACT

This work provides and updated account of the main developments in the area of the structural reliability with particular emphasis on component reliability. The application of these techniques to the design of ship structures are considered both in their direct application to specific ships and in the development of design codes. Other applications of reliability techniques to ship design are also considered, ranging from faut-tree techniques applied to mechanical and electrical systems to more general probabilistic modelling relevant to maintenance and inspection planing, requalification and life extension of structures, cost optimisation and target safety level assessment.
