ABSTRACT

By the end of this chapter, we hope that you will:

understand why and how the question of how Christianity relates to ‘other religions’ is a modern question

know about some of the important events and trends that have affected how that question is asked and answered now

know about an influential twentieth-century categorisation of Christian approaches to non-Christian religions, and be able to evaluate its usefulness

understand why relations with Judaism, and differently with Islam, raise distinctive theological questions for Christians in modernity

have thought about how social and cultural context affects Christian theological responses to non-Christian religions.
