ABSTRACT
Embracing the Christian faith strikes at the very heart of Kyrgyz ethnic identity and challenges the normative construction that ‘to be Kyrgyz is to be Muslim’. Many Kyrgyz Christians have challenged this understanding by reconstructing their sense of ethnic identity – what it means to be Kyrgyz – beyond a strictly Muslim framework. This chapter describes the process of how Kyrgyz Christians have begun to negotiate new pathways in Kyrgyz identity through discursive strategies identified in their post-conversion narratives. By locating their Christian faith within the symbolic representations of their culture and community, Kyrgyz Christian respondents have sought to legitimise their new religious identity in the wider Kyrgyz community and embedded in their sense of Kyrgyzness.
