ABSTRACT
Late medieval Catholicism developed a heady and ever-expanding range of religious and devotional practices, a complex mixture made even more so by the localism of devotional and spiritual concerns and loyalties. At the heart of all that practice, across all of Catholic Europe, lay the rites of the seven sacraments, of baptism, confirmation, Eucharist, penance, extreme unction, ordination, and marriage.
