Reporting business, finance and the City is a bit like reporting the weather: not much appears to happen most of the time, then suddenly there are floods and everyone’s talking about climate change. In the autumn of 2007 financial journalists found themselves back at the top of news bulletins with the collapse of Northern Rock bank, Britain’s fifth-biggest mortgage lender, and everyone was talking about a global economic crisis.
