ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the results of a research study demonstrating the use of tabletop exercises to assess threat management teams (TMT) member skills in threat assessment and their confidence in performing TMT responsibilities following tabletop exercise training. Tabletop exercises can also function as an evaluation tool for assessing baseline skills in threat assessment and understanding the critical thinking of participants. The research team developed two tabletop scenarios—one focused on workplace bullying and another on stalking in the workplace—based on prior investigations completed by the company as well as written company policies on threat assessment. This study provides evidence that assessing the level of threat can be a difficult and complex process with high individual variation. Monitoring and managing threats of violence, or threat assessment, are critical functions in a comprehensive workplace violence prevention program.
