ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on research questions in design research – a topic that has received little attention in the literature, even though research questions are at the heart of any research project. It addresses the issue of what counts as a good research question, summarizes some of the discussions about research questions in design research, and proposes a structure of a main research question and subquestions that may be suitable for a design research project or design study. The chapter proposes a structure that seems to work for design research projects as carried out by master's and PhD students at institute in classroom-based research. Some design researchers are fine with a design oriented question as the main question, but this would be a research-based design. Design research aims to provide new scientific knowledge, not just a product e.g., tools, educational materials, educational infrastructure.
