ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the global and specific research questions, the methods used for addressing them and the reasons for these choices. A number of specific research questions were presented as expanding on the basic research inquiry into how shipping companies as organizations learn from, filter and give credence/acceptability to differing risk perceptions and how this influences the work culture with special regard to group/team dynamics and individual motivation. The use of all forms of research methodology is limited by difficulties in achieving reliability, validity and meaning. The unit of analysis in the quantitative phase of the research was the ship officer and his/her perceptions. Among other reasons and importantly, ethical research issues regarding anonymity did not allow for the divulging of all the statements in the 'raw' form to a transcription service. Fortunately, the transcription process was beneficial to the writer in the sense that it increased early exploration and analysis of textual data.
