ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the foreground to the issues associated with researching difference. In providing overviews of concepts such as ‘difference’ and ‘othering’ we offer an introduction to the text which lays the foundations for the examples of applied research that characterise the book throughout. The discussion centres upon the proposal of a framework for researching difference and othering that other contributors to the book then make use of in their work. In doing so this chapter introduces key concepts such as positionality, impact, and intersectionality, which the chapters which follow bring to life. It begins to challenge the reader to think carefully about how their approach to research will help us to better understand the processes and practices in sport and physical activity which relate to othering and difference.
