ABSTRACT
In 2017, the prehistory and early history of football in Australia are being rewritten. Several of the misconceptions about the origins of each of the main codes have been challenged and new interpretations firmly grounded in contemporary evidence have emerged. Though there are significant differences in how the various codes of football developed in the nineteenth century, the Australian experience throws light on several of the elements which have underpinned the story of football in the United Kingdom.
