ABSTRACT

Open your mind to consider and try to understand your perception of the term resilience. Sometimes we might see it in setting policy or government documentation, or we might just say the word to ourselves. We usually do not question it because we are likely to believe that the word resilience means to bounce back, to be tough (Middaugh, 2017), or to have self-regulation and/or self-determination (Fite et al., 2017). Some of us might even make connections between the words ‘resilience’ and ‘grit’, as others such as Middaugh (2017) have done. This leads us to ask whether to be resilient an individual needs to have good self-confidence and buoyancy with the ability to bounce back.
